More process

It's been a few days...sort of been busy I guess.
People seem to be interested in the garden-type sculptures that I've made in the past.  There was one that is getting a lot of interest at a gallery where I have it now (just reduced the price of it, part of my new thinking about prices for art).  So, I am making a couple more, in addition to my other birds.
The start is to throw a couple of long cylinders.  I never bother with making them perfect.  In fact the more imperfect, the better.  I'm just going to beat them with a stick later anyway.

Here's one of the dudes that's gonna sit on top of one of the cylinders... a crow of sorts, of course.
 See?  Beaten.  good good.

The bird taking flight, or actually, I think it's landing, was ready to be hollowed out.  You see, I make them solid, which gives them more stability.  Once the piece dries ever so slightly...not too much or I can't cut it apart and too wet or, well, it's just mushy...I can carve it out to make it lighter and it will still retain it's original looseness that I'm looking for.

This guy is ready to be put back together.
There he is!  The base is tricky.  I suppose I could get some rebar after it's fired, but that would take away something, I think.  So I keep some clay for the base and whittle away at it as I go along, reducing it as much as I can while still keeping the whole piece stable.  Does any of this really matter to any of you?  Oh well, it's not like you're a captive audience or anything...go do something else if you want.

This last photo is my favorite piece in a way.  It isn't because it's dynamic or was difficult to do.  It's the position of the bird.  It's the angle.  It's perfect for what I was looking for in this piece.  It's very simple and will probably sell the fastest (I'll post a picture when it's complete).  hmmmm...

All right, that's it for now.  Once again, check out Tim Cahill's blog http://documentaryarts.blogspot.com/2011/01/love-in-action.html
he's got some good stuff going on.  I hope you don't mind me mentioning you so much Tim, I just like what you're writing.
Have you ever listened to "I've got a crush on you" either by Sinatra or Fitzgerald?  My favorite part, and I will quote Fitzgerald's version, but Sinatra's is the same except for the first part where he says "I'm your" instead of "You're my", is...
"You're my big and brave and handsome romeo,
How I won you I shall never know
It's not that you're attractive
But oh, how my heart grew active
When you
Came into view..."
I love that, "it's not that you're attractive"...for some reason that just cracks me up.
There's a little something about me you all know now.

love to all and all to love
Beth
